OUR HISTORY

 

Shining Light Bible Mission Church (SLBMC) was established in July 1969 by its founder, Rev. Cellenia Wood. Alongside a faithful group of committed believers, Rev. Wood initially held services at 2503 Cleveland Avenue in the North Linden community of Columbus, Ohio. The congregation later expanded its presence by purchasing additional properties at 2501, 2503, 2505, and 2507 Cleveland Avenue. The dedication and compassion of the early SLBMC congregation left a lasting impact on the North Linden community. For thirty-eight years, the church faithfully served as a beacon of hope, ministering to the spiritual and practical needs of residents. Their outreach included feeding the hungry, providing clothing to families in need, offering transportation to those unable to travel independently, and distributing toys during the Christmas season through the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program.

 

Rev. Wood served as pastor until her passing on December 3, 1998. Following her death, Elder Marvis L. McGowan was appointed Interim Pastor for one year and was subsequently installed as Senior Pastor on December 26, 1999.  In 2008, Shining Light relocated to its sanctuary at 95 W. 5th Avenue, between Olentangy River Road and High Street, where it continued the ministry established at its founding.

 

In August 2021, SLBMC moved to its current location at 2039 Sedan Avenue, Obetz, OH. The addition of a parsonage provided the opportunity to establish Barnabas House, a mission house dedicated to expanded outreach. As the church continues to serve communities throughout the Columbus area, it gives thanks for its rich history while remaining focused on the work ahead. With a commitment to faithful service, SLBMC seeks to leave a legacy of spiritual strength, compassion, and transformation, striving toward a more peaceful, loving, and just world. The Shining Light BMC mission is to teach and preach the Word of God, provide spiritual guidance and encouragement to the church and community, and serve those in need while developing impactful programs that nurture and empower youth.
